The Oscar for good design

Meet this year's EDIDA nominees, who also showed up at S/ALON BUDAPEST!

EDIDA, also known as the Oscars of the design scene, has been rewarding the best in the industry for 20 years.

Launched in 2003, the ELLE DECO INTERNATIONAL DESIGN AWARDS - also known as EDIDA - is a well-known international initiative of the contemporary design industry, in which ELLE Decoration magazines’ editors-in-chief nominate designers and projects in categories each year.

Since last year, we have been able to browse through the outstanding Hungarian designs and designers, and even vote for our favorite ones on the website of our partner ELLE Decoration. The ethos of the initiative is close to the spirit of S/ALON BUDAPEST, but that’s not the only reason for the following review: there are several designers, brands and products among the nominees that you may have already met at S/ALON BUDAPEST. Read on and get to know them better!

Brand of the Year

Nominees: Hannabi, Komok, Manooi, Vandor Studio, VPI Beton

The Brand of the Year category is for brands that stand out for their commitment to quality and design, as well as their unique products and solutions. Hannabi, for example, has been a regular participant in the event since its inception. Hannabi’s made to measure modular sofas have been seen in stand-alone interiors, but also in other brands’ spaces and autonomous installations. You can find out more about the brand in our previous interview with founder Aniko Rácz.

Manooi is a unique crystal chandelier design and manufacturing company founded in 2006 by artist-designer couple Judit Zoltai and János Héder. Today, Manooi has become a global brand that stands for precision and luxury, with products in countries from Dubai to New York. They first appeared at S/ALON BUDAPEST as part of the Hello Hungarian Design initiative, but over the years their crystal chandeliers have lit up the interiors of many of our exhibitors.

The creation of Vandor Studio was inspired by the love of weaving and the belief that home textiles made from natural materials help to create a harmonious home. Krisztina Vándor’s goal as a designer is that the textiles she creates should be of value and make the lives of their users more comfortable in the long run. The products are based on the tradition of hand weaving and are made in manufactories using small-scale methods. Krisztina’s main focus is on the design of woolen blankets and other home textiles.

Designer of the Year

Nominees: Architres Studio (Dániel Kis és László Csizinszky), Design Studio *ness (Zsófi Ferenczi, Rebeka Sipos), András Mészáros, Andrea Szakos, Péter Szendrő DLA 81font

The nominees in the Laufen-sponsored Designer of the Year category have earned recognition for creating harmony between function, style, quality of craftsmanship and project management.

As one of the winners of our 2019 design competition, Architres Studio created one of the most interesting spaces with inverse spatial organization. They turned the space inside out, creating a vertical system that broke away from classical conventions and instead of a horizontal layout, they aimed upwards, making the most of the limited floor space. Since then, the studio of Dániel Kis and László Csizinszky has finished a number of spectacular projects.

Interior designer Andrea Szakos is behind NATRUALii Concept Store, the domestic brand representation of Farrow & Ball and MARAND, which specializes in Moroccan products. All three brands are regulars at S/ALON BUDAPEST, representing the world of sustainable, natural solutions from the very beginning.

Péter Szendrő DLA, or more precisely his agency 81font, designed the large-scale, multi-room interiors for CODE in 2021 and 2022, which most recently featured a tasteful combination of premium brands such as cc tapis, Cassina, Louis Poulsen, Wall&Deco, Kerakoll, Dedar and Tacchini.

CODE debuted at S/ALON BUDAPEST in 2021, featuring specialties from Antoniolupi alongside the aforementioned brands.

Product of the Year

Nominees: Blass Nova lamp (design: Péter Danczkay, manufacturer: Oleant), Cast iron collection (design: Adrienn Király, Bálint Szalai, manufacturer: itthon. / Antal Öntöde), Námi daybed (design & production: Petra Pinezits, Alexandra Takács, NORNA), Peach chair (design: Hevesi Annabella, manufacturer: Kárpitos Partner Group), Zen table (design & production: Anna Szőnyi x Timbart)

The finalists in this category are products that are made in small series production with attention to detail, focusing on style and usability.

At S/ALON BUDAPEST 2022, the Námi sofa was admired among neon lights in the Holographic colorscope installation, while the Blass Nova lamp designed by Péter Danczkay took center stage in the Grohe Secret Garden walk-in bath.

Sustainable Initiative of the Year

Nominnees: MOON by DBE.Furniture collection reused aluminum (Kristóf Koczka), Re-built Glass Doors recycled glass (Zsuzsanna Deák glass and ceramics designer, artist), REBLE table collection made of marble scraps and metal (Architres Studio, László Csizinszky interior designer, Dániel Kis architect), REPETA Catering concrete collection in the spirit of circularity (SARAKELE STUDIO, CONCRAZY), SoundWool Acoustic panels made of recycled wool (Apol Temesi raw material researcher-textile designer)

Sustainable initiatives are particularly exciting – they are not only beautiful, but offer a vision of a brighter future. REBLE, made from marble scraps and metal, is the first furniture collection of the aforementioned Architres Studio. REPETA, a concrete hospitality collection in the spirit of circularity, is the result of a joint project between SARAKELE STUDIO and CONCRAZY. You could already meet Sara Kele several times at S/ALON BUDAPEST as part of the Hello Hungarian Design programme, while Concrazy, known for its creative use of concrete, was attended for the first time last year.
